Oyster Harbour...Changes in One Lifetime

 'It's dead'
Is the first thing dad says to me
as we wander onto a small beach on the Oyster Harbour.

'We used to come here as kids with Uncle Tommy...
He'd have us rolling over piles of seaweed
to collect the tiny brown crabs
that we used for bait to catch brim...
...the size & abundance of those Brim back then!
Once there was weed washed up everywhere.
There's no sea grasses left...not like there used to be...

'You could walk into the water and pull up seaweed/grass
that had an abundance of mussels attached...
and the cockles that lay beneath the sand!
Nothing like it used to be...'

'It all started to go wrong when they put in the boat pens at Emu Point...
they should never have done that...'

Walkabout with dad,
 fellow Earth lover...
revisiting places of childhood exploration
and memories
of a harbour full of life.
